Homebrew using screwcaps: epilogue

So, I popped open the screwcap after 3 weeks and the beer's spot on. Turns out you can make homebrew using old screwcap wine bottles.

Most important to take note is to get a tight seal, and all should be good.

Screwtop wine bottles for homebrew

Screwtop wine bottles are becoming more prevalent these days, especially for the budget/midrange wines. I have quite a few of them left over. I always wondered whether it'd be okay to use them in homebrew, but I haven't been able to find much information on the Interwebs. I'm currently experimenting the current batch with 4 wine bottles (rest are in PET bottles). Hope they turn out alright.

If in doubt, try LC_ALL=C

Due to unfortunate circumstances I've recently had to deal with Windows software and as a Unix user that of course meant using Wine as the first line of defense (the second is VirtualBox with a trial version of Windows 2008, which you can freely download from Microsoft.).

Wine doesn't always work when you have your locale set to something other than English. If in doubt, try:

$ LC_ALL=C wine /your/program.exe

At least I found that this was needed to make the self-extracting Windows installation DVD work.

First Post!

I've started a blog again, mainly thanks to Google.

Many years ago, I thought it would be really cool if you had your own domain and static IP address so that you can host things out of your own home.

I grew up, and then promptly did nothing.

But today, I finally succumbed to the temptation of blowing away 10 bucks on my own vanity domain. And now that I have, I'm not quite sure what I should do with it. But I guess I will do my bit to help generate some more (unhelpful?) daily drivel.
